What is the main theme of the show?

42nd Street is “…the quintessential backstage musical comedy classic. It is the song and dance fable of Broadway with an American Dream story.”

It centers around a young hopeful, Peggy Sawyer, who comes to New York to make her mark (and fulfill her dream) of being a “star” on Broadway. Set in 1933 at the height of the Great Depression, this show explores the grit and perseverance of the theatre community and the belief that dreams do come true if you are willing to work hard.

Who is eligible to audition?

All alumni of Gahanna Lincoln High School from the class of 2024 and prior are eligible to audition for the show. Sorry, the class of 2025 is not eligible. They will be finishing their final weeks of high school when auditions are taking place, and there is a lot happening in those weeks leading up and after graduation. Enjoy this unique moment in your lives! However, 2025 grads and current high school students are encouraged to volunteer to help this show be a success in other way we’ll announce at a later date.

What if my plans change and I have to audition online?

No problem! If you need to go from in person to on-line or vice-versa, we just ask that you let us know as soon as you can.

Do you have character descriptions?

There will be character descriptions provided early January. If you want to check out characters beforehand, take a look at the 42nd Street Study Guide online or on the Wikipedia Page.

Are there certain ages you are looking at for particular characters?

PERFORMERS OF ALL ETHNICITIES, GENDER IDENTITIES, AND AGES, AS WELL AS PERFORMERS WITH DISABILITIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT MATERIALS!

What will auditions entail?

UPDATE 04/01/2025: Individuals interested in only dance numbers, do not need to perform a monologue. Please still prepare a song for your audition.

UPDATE 01/14/2025: Dance videos, vocal cuts, and monologues are now available on the Audition Resources page

Scene Work: You will be asked to prepare a short monologue from the show. There will be several options available to you but you will only be asked to perform one. Sides are now posted on the Audition Resources page. NOTE: If you’re only interested in participating in dance numbers, you can skip the monologue.

Vocals: You will prepare a vocal selection from the show. Rehearsal tracks and music can be found on the Audition Resources page.

Dance: We will ask you to learn a short dance video which will be posted on the webpage. If you are a strong tapper, we ask that you also include a 20-30 second improv piece which highlights your abilities/skills. The dance will NOT be taught on audition days. Please learn the dance from the videos on the Audition Resources page and come prepared.

What if my best attribute isn’t exactly singing?

Don’t worry. There are roles listed on the character sheet which do not include singing. Depending on the size of the cast, we may be expanding the ensemble non-singing roles as well.

Where can we get our hands on the libretto? 😉

There have been a few people who have found the entire libretto (and score) online.

Are you doing original Broadway choreography?

All dances will be based upon the needs of the story and, of course, the abilities of the dancers involved.
We will be asking all dancers to wear black tap shoes for the tap numbers.
Ladies: heeled black tap shoes for the dance numbers.
Men: black tap shoes or black dress shoes for the dance numbers.

If I don’t make the cast, can I still do backstage crew?

YES! There is a google CREW form being developed that will ask you about both of these opportunities! It should be on the web page soon.

What about orchestra? Will there be auditions to play in the pit?

Orchestra auditions will not be held but rather, musicians have been selected who are actively performing and “in shape” to handle the demands of the book and an extremely limited rehearsal schedule.

Please explain the “participation tiers“?

We understand that not everyone can commit to the full schedule of rehearsals, or may not be in the Gahanna area. We want to be as accommodating as possible to encourage participation. We’ve created three tiers of participation you can take part in:

Tier 1: When called, you are available to attend any and all in-person rehearsals from June 9 – June 26 & July 7 – 17 on weekday evenings

Tier 2: When called, you are able to attend some rehearsals in-person and others via Zoom

Tier 3: You are ONLY available for in-person rehearsals during tech week (July 18 – 24) to participate in the last number of the show. This tier will only be considered for, and get to participate in the final number.
